Biography
Rowland Herbert-Faulkner is a PhD Candidate in the Department of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley. Presently, his dissertation work focuses on the financing and data governance of smart cities and the proposed research work will form part of his dissertation. He completed a master’s thesis at UC Berkeley in 2018 titled: Technology-driven Urban Management: Evolving Governance Structures in Smart Cities, which employed the Quayside smart city effort spearheaded by Sidewalk Labs as a case study. He holds a BS in Civil Engineering from MIT (2016), a MS in Transportation Engineering from UC Berkeley (2017), and a Master of City Planning degree from UC Berkeley (2018). His research supervisor and dissertation chair is Professor Karen Trapenberg Frick, and committee members include Professor Daniel Chatman in the UC Berkeley Department of City and Regional Planning, Professor Joan Walker in the UC Berkeley Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Professor Karen Chapple, Director of the School of Cities at the University of Toronto.
