Director, AI Security Initiative
Jessica Newman is the Director of the AI Security Initiative (AISI), housed at the UC Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity. She is also a Co-Director of the UC Berkeley AI Policy Hub. Her work focuses on the global governance and security implications of artificial intelligence. Jessica has published dozens of papers and articles on the implications of AI and emerging technologies in outlets including Brookings TechStream, The Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, The Hill, The Los Angeles Times, and The Pharmaceutical Journal. Jessica was previously an AI Policy Specialist with The Future of Life Institute and has held research positions with Harvard’s Program on Science, Technology & Society, the Institute for the Future, the Center for Genetics and Society, and The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Jessica received her master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and her bachelor’s in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley with highest distinction honors. Jessica is a member of the OECD Network of Experts on AI (ONE AI), the University of California Presidential Working Group on Artificial Intelligence, and the Partnership on AI Expert Group on Fair, Transparent, and Accountable AI.
